Review “One by One” by Ruth Ware

“One by One” by Ruth Ware

Hardback BOTM edition.

Synopsis:

Trendy London based tech startup, Snoop, hosts a company retreat in the gorgeous French Alps. They stay at an exclusive chalet in St. Antoine 2000, complete with a chalet girl and live-in chef. Although most of the guests seem entitled and agitated upon arrival, their stay begins like any other- champagne and chit chat all around. However, when one of the cofounders ambushes the group before dinner with a presentation about a buyout offer, the mood quickly plummets.

The next day, the group ventures out to the slopes on their skis and boards in hopes of raising spirits. As the minutes tick down towards lunchtime, the weather begins rapidly declining. When they finally make it back to the chalet, the group notices someone is missing.

A horrifying avalanche hits the chalet shortly after lunch, trapping the remaining employees, the chef, and the chalet girl inside. With no power or access to the outside world, tensions mount. As loyalties are heavily tested, the group begins dwindling down… one by one.

Rating: 5/5

Review:

Told from two different points of view, that of the chalet girl and that of a minority shareholder in the company, I found this novel completely gripping! I’m a huge Ruth Ware fan, and having read all of her books; I can confidently say this is by far my favorite. From the gorgeous setting to the powerful character descriptions, I found myself truly transported to their retreat in the French Alps.

Not unlike her previous novels, the first few chapters are a little confusing as the story gets set up. By page 65, things began clicking into place, and I find that such fun! There’s a lot of characters, but their personalities are so different that it doesn’t take long to differentiate.

Ware is an absolute genius when it comes to thrillers, and she never ceases to amaze me! I love this book!

Conclusion:

“One by One” is an ingenious murder mystery, packed full of twists, turns, and brilliant characters!
