A powerhouse of a novel that will tug hard on your heartstrings!
Cecily finds herself at a bar late one night, in the spring of 2001, questioning her life in New York City. Cecily is in her late twenties and hasn’t climbed the ladder as a reporter as much as she had hoped to after moving here from the midwest. She recently ended a three-year relationship because her boyfriend, Mathew, wasn’t ready to commit to her. Against her better judgment, she decides to give Mathew a call. As Cecily is reaching for the phone, however, a man next to her tells her not to do it- that she will regret it. Something deep inside Cecily urges her to take this stranger’s advice, and over the next few hours Grant and Cecily form a powerful connection.
Grant and Cecily spend the course of the summer falling madly love. Even when Grant has to go to London to help his twin brother in a medical study, Cecily visits him. They hate being apart and stay in contact as much as possible.
Grant returns to New York from London the night of September 10th and tragically goes missing in the chaos of the terror attacks the following day. When Cecily attends a 9/11 vigil in Washington Square Park for a work assignment, she finds a “missing person” poster with Grants face on it and a phone number.
On Cecily’s mission to find answers, she discovers someone else looking for Grant. Someone completely unexpected. Was Grant really the person she thought he was? Could Cecily actually love someone she didn’t really know?
“I guess that’s always the case when it comes to intimate relationships. There are some things that only the two people involved can ever really comprehend. And sometimes those things are elusive even to them.”
Chapter 26- The Lies That Bind
If it were possible, I would give this book six out of five stars. I have absolutely fallen in love with every aspect of it. From the first sentence all the way until the last, it is utterly perfect.
We follow alongside Cecily as she searches for the meaning of true love- all while struggling with grief and confusion. It is written so beautifully that I genuinely felt every emotion.
“The Lies That Bind” is a roller coaster of a novel with twists and turns throughout. Although some were predictable, others were not at all! Quite often, I love a book but not it’s ending. This was so different. Giffin ties the novel into a flawless bow!
“The Lies That Bind” was everything I needed and more wrapped up into one book. It honestly has the potential of being my favorite contemporary fiction novel of all time.
